Family Talk & The Hip Hop Doc

The staff of the Community Support and Resiliency Unit reaches out to teens at Renaissance Village every Wednesday afternoon through the Teen Support Group. The group meets at the Family Center at Rosie’s Village. The group is lead by LCSW, Toni Bankston and co-facilitated by Oneal, Elizabeth and MSW intern Tara Charpentier. On average, 15-20 amazing teens engage in activities and discussions focusing on social skills, violence prevention, health education and healthy coping. Teen group meetings always begin with healthy snacks. Visitors to the teen group include Rita Dominitz, Deputy Director of the Children’s Health Fund Mental Health Division, who led a conversation on the dynamics of communication between parents and their children. Dr. Rani Whitfield, “tha Hip Hop Doc”, also paid our group a visit for an evening of health education. Parents and teens enjoyed Dr. Whitfield’s hip-hop inspired relationship, health issues education workshop. Dr. Whitfield helped to dispel myths about sexuality and answer questions posed by the teens as well as their parents. For more information on Dr. Whitfield visit his website at www.thahiphopdoc.com

Mind/Body Connection
BRCHP recognizes the relationship between healthy bodies and healthy minds. Team members from both the medical and mental health units participated in a professional training workshop provided by the Center for Mind-Body Medicine. The training centered on the importance of the mind/body connection and the ways in which meditation, breathing, movement and guided imagery can be used to help support and guide clients. Team members were instructed on relaxation and meditation techniques. The “soft belly breathing” technique, is a simple yet effective deep breathing method helps to increase relaxation and relieve tension. Mind-Body techniques are utilized by BRCHP team members with clients in individual and group settings. BRCHP would like to thank the Center for Mind-Body Medicine for providing scholarships to team members which made our participation possible. For more information on the Center for Mind-Body Medicine visit their website at www.cmbm.org
