On June 3, 2003, The Sensory Integration Education and Research Foundation (SIERF) became a reality when it was founded by two experienced occupational thera¬pists, and a parent of a child with a sensory integration disorder.
Mission Statement:
SIERF’s serves three equally important missions:
1. To provide information and education support for consumers and professionals.
2. To support research efforts in the area of SPD and related disorders.
3. To provide treatment for those individuals who may not have access.
Through its mission, SIERF attempts to serve as a liaison to help parents advocate for their children and to help families link to health organizations within their communities that offer evaluation and therapy treatment with a sensory integration or sensory pro¬cessing component.
NOTE: Recently, newer terminology includes an expanding number of names for sensory integration as research efforts begin to clarify this disorder. Addi¬tional terms in the literature include: SPD, Sensory Processing Disorder; SMD, Sensory Modulation Disorder and Regulatory Disorders of Sensory Processing, (reference 0-3 Diagnostic Classification Revised, 400, 604 and 710).
